About HTML runner

HTML runner is an online code playground for trying ideas quickly. Type HTML, CSS and JavaScript in three tabs and the preview updates as you go. console.log output, warnings and errors (with file names and line numbers) appear in the console underneath, so you can debug without opening developer tools.

Your code runs in a locked-down sandbox: the preview has no access to this website, its cookies or your account, and it cannot send network requests or submit forms. Start from a template, check the layout at phone, tablet and desktop widths, save projects on this device, and download the result as a single HTML file. Plus adds multi-file projects, image and font uploads, ZIP export and import, more templates and a page-structure inspector.

How to use it

  1. Pick a template or start typing in the HTML, CSS and JavaScript tabs.
  2. Watch the preview update, or turn off Auto-run and press Run (Ctrl+Enter) when you are ready.
  3. Read logs, warnings and errors in the console; click Clear to empty it.
  4. Choose a preview width to check phone and tablet layouts.
  5. Save the project on this device or download it as an HTML file.

Good to know

  • The preview is sandboxed. fetch(), XMLHttpRequest, WebSockets, form submission, pop-ups and embedded frames are blocked. Scripts, styles, images and fonts can load from https: addresses.
  • localStorage and sessionStorage work inside the preview but are kept in memory for one run only.
  • A preview that stops responding for 3 seconds (for example an endless loop) is stopped automatically. Very heavy code can still slow your browser.
  • Saved projects stay in this browser on this device. Clearing site data removes them, so download anything important.

Questions and answers

Is it safe to run code I copied from somewhere?

The preview runs in a sandbox with its own locked-down origin, so it cannot read this site’s cookies, storage or page, or call its servers. It can still show anything a web page can, so only run code you are comfortable viewing.

Why does my fetch() call fail?

Network requests are turned off inside the preview so the runner cannot be used to reach other sites or services from your browser. Put sample data in a JavaScript variable instead.

Can I use a library such as a CSS framework?

Yes. Add a <link> or <script> tag with an https: address, for example from a public CDN. It loads inside the sandbox like any other page resource.

Is my code uploaded?

No. Your code, saved projects and uploads stay in your browser on this device.
