Welcome to Text & Code Studio

Everything here stays on your device. Documents are saved in this browser as you type.

Try it

  • Press New for a blank document, or Open to load files (or drop them here).
  • Pick a language from the toolbar; it is detected from the file extension.
  • Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) to find and replace, with regex support.
  • Ctrl+S downloads the current document. Ctrl+Shift+F formats JSON, CSS, HTML, XML and SQL.

About Text & Code Studio

Text & Code Studio is a lightweight editor that runs entirely in your browser. Open several files at once, switch between them in tabs, and get line numbers and syntax colouring for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, XML, CSS, Markdown, Python, YAML and SQL. The language is picked from the file extension, and you can change it from the toolbar.

It is built for quick jobs: tidying a JSON response and finding the exact line of a syntax error, writing a README with a live preview, or running a careful regex replace across a config file. Your documents are saved in this browser’s storage as you type, so they are still there when you come back, and nothing is sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. Start typing in the welcome document, press New for a blank one, or Open to load text files from your device (you can also drop files onto the editor).
  2. Pick the language if it was not detected. Markdown documents can show a live preview beside the editor or on its own.
  3. Use Format, Minify and Validate for JSON, or Format for CSS, HTML, XML and SQL. JSON errors show their line and column and the line is highlighted.
  4. Open Find and replace with Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac). Turn on Match case, Whole word or Regex, then replace matches one at a time or all at once.
  5. Download the current document with Ctrl+S, or export a Markdown preview as an HTML file.

Good to know

  • Files up to 2 MB each and up to 20 open documents. Syntax colouring switches off above about 150,000 characters to keep typing smooth.
  • Autosave keeps up to about 2 MB of documents in this browser. Clearing site data, private windows and some browser settings remove it, so download anything important.
  • Highlighting is a fast approximation, not a full language parser, so unusual syntax may be coloured imperfectly. Long lines scroll sideways rather than wrapping.
  • Regular expressions run in a background worker and stop after one second, so a pattern that would take too long is cancelled instead of freezing the page.
  • The Markdown preview does not run HTML embedded in Markdown and does not load images, so a document cannot contact other websites.

Questions and answers

Where are my documents stored?

Only in this browser’s local storage on this device. They are never uploaded. Use “Clear saved copy” to remove them, or turn autosave off.

Can I undo a format or a replace-all?

Yes. Formatting and replacing are applied as normal edits, so Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z) undoes them in most browsers. Switching tabs starts a fresh undo history for that document.

How do I move focus out of the editor with the keyboard?

Tab inserts indentation while you type. Press Esc first and the next Tab moves focus to the next control as usual.

Which regex syntax is supported?

JavaScript regular expressions, with the multiline flag on so ^ and $ match at line breaks. Replacements can use $1, $<name> and $&.
