About Simple Video Editor

Simple Video Editor covers the everyday jobs: cut the start and end off a recording, split it into pieces, put clips in a new order, drop the bits you do not want, add titles or captions, and turn the sound up, down or off for each clip.

Your videos never leave your device. To export, the editor plays your edit from start to finish into a recorder built into the browser, so export takes as long as the edit itself. The output is WebM, or MP4 in browsers that can record it.

How to use it

  1. Add one or more video files with the picker or by dropping them on the editor.
  2. Select a clip on the timeline to trim its in and out points, change its volume or mute it. Use Split to cut the selected clip at the playhead.
  3. Drag clips to reorder them, or select one and use the move buttons or Alt+Arrow keys. Add text overlays and set when they appear.
  4. Press Export, keep the tab open and visible while it records in real time, then download the video.

Good to know

  • Up to 20 files and 500 MB in total, and an edit of up to 10 minutes. Output is at most 1080p at 30 frames per second.
  • Which files open depends on the codecs your browser supports. MP4 (H.264) and WebM work in most browsers; some MOV, MKV or HEVC files may not.
  • Export runs in real time and needs the tab to stay visible. The output format depends on your browser: most record WebM, while Safari and some recent versions of Chrome and Edge can record MP4.
  • WebM files recorded by browsers may not show a total duration in some players, and there are no transitions, filters or multiple video tracks.

Questions and answers

Why does export take as long as my video?

The editor uses the browser’s built-in recorder, which captures the edit while it plays. That keeps everything on your device without extra software, but it means a five-minute edit takes about five minutes to export.

Will I get MP4 or WebM?

MP4 if your browser can record it, otherwise WebM. The export panel shows which format your browser will produce before you start.

Why will my video not open?

The browser has to be able to play the file itself. If a file fails, try converting it to MP4 (H.264 and AAC) first, or open the editor in a different browser.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Import, editing and export all happen in your browser. Closing or refreshing the page clears the project, so download your export before you leave.
